Natural gas has an odorant added so leaks smell like rotten eggs or sulfur. A strong smell, a hissing sound near a gas line, or dead vegetation over a buried gas line is an emergency. Get everyone out, leave the door open behind you, and call PG&E or 911 from a safe distance. Do not use light switches, phones or anything that could spark inside the house.
When PG&E responds, they make the situation safe, which often means shutting off gas at the meter and tagging the leaking appliance or line. They do not usually repair piping on the property owner's side of the meter. That repair is our job.
We locate the leak with an electronic gas detector and a pressure test, repair or replace the failed section or connector, retest the system, and relight your appliances once everything holds pressure.
